Islamabad vs Lahore — Which City Is Better for Families?

If you are relocating within Pakistan and torn between Islamabad and Lahore, you are not alone. Both cities attract families from across the country, but they offer very different experiences.

Cost of Living

Islamabad is significantly more expensive. Rent for a 5-marla house in a decent sector starts from 45,000 PKR per month. In Lahore, you can find a similar house for 25,000-35,000 PKR. Groceries, dining out, and domestic help are all 20-30% more expensive in Islamabad.

Education

Both cities have excellent schools. Islamabad has some of the top schools in the country — Beaconhouse, LGS, and Roots are all well-represented. Lahore has an equally strong education scene with additional options like Aitchison, GC University, and LUMS for higher education.

Safety

Islamabad is generally considered safer. The city is smaller, more planned, and has better policing. Lahore is safer than it was ten years ago but still has more crime in absolute terms simply because of the larger population.

Weather

Islamabad wins here with four distinct seasons, pleasant springs, and relatively cooler summers. Lahore gets unbearably hot in May-June (45°C+) and the smog season from November to February is genuinely difficult to live with.

Career Opportunities

Lahore offers more job opportunities due to its larger economy, more businesses, and bigger population. Islamabad is more government and NGO oriented. If you work in tech, Lahore and Karachi offer more private sector opportunities.

If budget is not a concern and you value clean air, safety, and greenery, Islamabad wins. If you want affordability, more activities, and a bigger social circle, Lahore is your city.
