How to Spot a Scam Listing on Classified Websites

The Warning Signs

Scammers have become more sophisticated, but their listings still follow recognizable patterns. Once you know what to look for, you can spot a fake listing in seconds.

Price Too Good to Be True

A 2023 iPhone 15 Pro Max for 30,000 PKR? A Honda Civic 2022 for 15 lakh? If the price is dramatically below market value, the listing is almost certainly a scam. Scammers use low prices to attract impulsive buyers who skip due diligence.

Generic or Stolen Photos

Right-click the image and search it on Google. If the same photo appears on a manufacturer's website, a foreign classifieds site, or multiple other listings, it is stolen. Legitimate sellers take their own photos.

Pressure to Pay Quickly

Phrases like "many buyers interested" or "need to sell today" are designed to make you act without thinking. Real sellers understand that buyers need time to make decisions.

Refusal to Meet

If the seller always has an excuse for why they cannot meet — they are out of town, too busy, or the item is with a relative — be suspicious. On OEADS, we recommend always meeting in person for any transaction.

Upfront Payment Requests

Never pay before seeing the item. Scammers often ask for a small "booking amount" or "advance" to reserve the item. Once you pay, they disappear.

What to Do If You Spot a Scam

Report the listing immediately using the report button. This helps protect other buyers. If you have already been scammed, file a complaint with the FIA cyber crime wing at complaint.fia.gov.pk.
